Hoover U831900 Windtunnel 2 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Hoover U831900 Windtunnel 2 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SPRING 2011 UPDATE (3.5 years later)
It's hard to believe that I've had this vaccum for almost 4 years already and it's still going strong. I'll report back when the thing konks out (unless I konk out first). I'm hoping for an 8 year lifespan (on the vac, not me) - we'll see.
I've started using the allergen bags vs the hepa bags to save a few bucks but I still have hepa bags for when I really want to do a great job (still get the bags from amazon). Vaccuming after a christmas tree still yields that smell of pine needles from the vac regardless of whether it's hepa or just allergen (until I change the bag). Emptying the bag is easier with the self closing feature. String does get caught in the roller and you do have to clean that out from time to time with a knife to cut the strings and pull them out but that's with all vacs.
Much happier still with this upright bagged vac than with the canister vacs or a bagless ones I've had before. I'm sticking to bagged uprights and it's lasting quite well.
Overall, still hate vaccuming but I'm much happier vaccuming with a sensibly priced vaccum than with some $800 Miele or Dyson....this is a sound investment and at least mine has held up very well, no broken parts. Besides, no matter what vac you get, you're going to hate it right ;-) ;-) so why buy a $1,000 vac made by Swiss artisans.
Happy vaccuming.ORIGINAL REVIEWFirst of all thank you to all the reviewers of not just Hoover but Eureka, Electrolux, Dyson, Hoover, Orek, and all the other brands out there --- especially the critical reviews, they're the most helpful in my mind although - I'm writing a positive review. Its a tall order to the people who build vacuums though to build a perfect vac: a tool to help us do something that we inherently hate to do.
I guess you're getting old in life when you can say you've owned 6 vacuum cleaners in your life and having owned 6, I've been through it all: bagged, bagless, canister, upright etc....and I've used every single one of them until they dropped (I never buy to replace a working vac - run it into the ground). This is what my school of hard knocks has taught me and why I bought this one and what I like dislike about this vacuum.
Canister vs Upright
My last vacuum was a Hoover canister and I bought it because I erroneously thought it had more suction than an upright -- actually most uprights are more powerful and better for carpets where canister vacs are more maneuverable and better for hardwood floors. I have about 50% hardwood and 50% carpet but I mostly use the vac on the carpet and use a broom, mop as needed on hardwood so for me carpet cleaning power was the requirement.
Bagged vs Bagless
Bagged vacuums tend to lose suction as the bag fills up -- so your first vacuuming on a clean bag is great and then things go downhill as the bag fills the dirt and mess gets compressed in the bag and you lose suction. Bagless vacuums retain suction throughout the filling of the container but and here's a very important but, you have to empty the container very very regularly, almost a container per room sometimes and emptying the container is always always a dirty affair --- not as bad as empting a shopvac but definitely not what the commercials/informercials show or fail to show and you cannot cheat on NOT emptying the container regularly as the penalty is a time consuming and messy affair to clean gobs of gunk out of your new and sometimes $700 expensive vac that looked so pretty on that commercial --- so if you go bagless empty the container regularly or spend most of your time unclogging your vacuum vs vacuuming your house. Sealing and seating the container is also very important or you can wind up with lost suction or a mess. Also, if you don't empty your container after you finish with a bagless, you create an environment from which dustmites etc can escape etc....and lookes very ugly. Other than that, bagless vacs tend to look prettier (is that possible) no, it must be the marketing talking there but in my experience they're as reliable as bag vacs but no more. All that said, bagged vacs don't need changing as regularly -- you vacuum multiple times (sometimes I change a bag every several months when I notice I'm not cleaning as good as before) so at least to me, bagged works best. I'm not messy and my place stays fairly clean but enough that I'd change a container a couple of times during an average housecleaning.
Cheap vs Expensive
Price seems to be somewhat overrated with vacuums (although $200 is pretty steep in my mind)...Consumer Reports had some great ratings and rated this vacuum 2nd place just under a Kenmore on a variety of tests and much more expensive vacuums were rated less favorably. That said, different people have different tastes and if getting a premium brand vacuum makes you happy - by all means. But in my experience (crosscorrelated with Consumer Reports) price does not correlate well with quality, dependability, or cleaning ability in the vacuum industry. Salesmanship, Marketing, Advertising and cost dictate price in my experience. If you just got an $11million condo, you probably have help and probably aren't shopping for a vac so that particular issue is moot - the rich don't buy vacuums (really) and vacuums are not a class statement in my mind -- so to me, buy something that works, is reliable, and is easy to clean empty.
What was I looking for:
-I've come to realize in life that the honeymoon period for a vacuum is extremely short, much shorter than the 6mos with me and a new car or the 2years with my average house....its more like 5 minutes so knowing that my love affair would be limited to reading the reviews on Amazon after my old vac broke and a brief consumation of the first vacuuming, I settled on looking for these qualities:
1) Something that worked well
2) Reliability & Dependability (works well for years)
3) Clean (not have to empty the bucket every 3 minutes)
4) HEPA
5) Carpet cleaning Power
6) Low Hassle
What made me buy this:
1) Bag (in my experience, they're less hassle overall and neater for me)
2) Carpet cleaning power
3) Autorewind of power cord (I know I'm lazy)
4) Dependability and Reliability
5) Consumer Reports
6) The 10 gazillion reviews on all vacuums here on Amazon (yes I read them and some of them are amazingly insightful and there are some people here who must be paid to write reviews and thankfully they are easy to spot. I found some of the more critical honest reviews useful and sometimes comical....especially the electric shock defect on one major and highly advertised brands...I was laughing at your pain fellow reviewer but seriously thank you for bringing it to light and steering me from some a $600 mistake...as a disclaimer, I'm not paid and I am an owner of the U8311-900....btw, one easy way to tell most fake reviewers is to look at a reviewer's other reviews and if they only have one or review 6 vacuums ask yourself the question....the real reviewer will have a healthy body of reviews on different products they buy for our homes and personal use after all, we're just living our lives out here)
How I've fared with the Wind Tunnel 2 Bag vacuum;
1) Setup was very easy - two screws to attach the handle
2) Came with 3 HEPA bags (1 installed, 2 new)
3) Was vacuuming in 5 minutes
4) Has a clean dirty indicator (its more of a gadget...small optical eye...in reality, you can hear if you're picking up dirt or not usually but it looks neat)
5) The wand and accessories are right there (it makes it easier for me since with the canister vac, changing from floor to accessories was a chore)....granted, the only real accessory I use is the edge cleaning wand so I can get my edges clean....overall very happy to be able to use it readily
6) Not too loud -- quieter than manhy of my other vacuums
7) Wide -- its not a small beast, you can tell this is a vacuum for a 2+ bedroom abode with carpet but not too heavy - average for a large upright.
8) HEPA bag - I am not a clean freak but knowing I'm not putting dust back into my air is good to know
9) Self Sealing Bags -- again not a total clean freak but good to know I don't have to stick my fingers into the mess or breath the dust when I change the bag.
10) Easier to store over a canister vac -- put in upright position and roll into closet vs bending over to pick up canister dragging huge hose and then pushing the whole thing into laundry room and 5 minutes later hear the clack as the vacuum falls over if I don't secure it right.
11) Manual heigh adjustment for my type of carpet
Pet Peaves:
1) The cord's position makes it so that you run over it with the left back wheel if you don't clip it to a provided clip (very minor and the engineers thought enough to put the clip) but if it breaks, I can see myself vacuuming with one hand and holding the cord with my left.
2) The cleaning wand is the handle and it telescopes with a little pin (kindof like the type that modern aluminum crutches have) you push the little pin and it telescopes out but the result is that there's just a little bit of play as you push and pull the vacuum (almost unnoticable) but its there, I noticed it when I first assembled the vac and then forgot about it once I started vacuuming but if you're overly obsessive compulsive, I can see how if you fixate on that, it could drive you nuts
3) Its not self propelled but then again, that's a whole other mess of things to break that sometimes works and sometimes don't work.
4) Its no where near as maneuverable as a canister vac but I knew this going...Read more›

Equipped with a powerful yet quiet 12-amp motor, this upright vacuum cleaner features patented WindTunnel 2 technology located in the floor nozzle, which forces the rotating brushes and airflow to work in harmony. It lifts and traps the dirt, keeping it from scattering back into the carpet, so dirt ends up in the cleaner not on the floor. With red and green lights, its embedded DirtFinder system indicates areas that may need more cleaning attention. The green "clean" light remains on while vacuuming except when the detector senses a larger amount of dirt; then the red "dirty" light will come on to suggest additional vacuuming in the area until the light changes back to green.
When in the upright position, the vacuum cleaner's agitator brush roll automatically shuts off, which allows all the suction power to be focused in the hose for effective above-floor cleaning. Attachments include a dusting brush, furniture nozzle, crevice tool, and a powered pet-hair cleaning tool. The unit's handle instantly converts into a telescopic wand, while its Tag Along grip helps guide the cleaner. Combined with the super stretch hose, it offers 12-feet of cleaning reach, eliminating the need to bend or stretch while cleaning.
The vacuum also provides a Breathe-Easy hygienic filter bag system, which makes changing the bag clean and simple. When removed, the bag automatically seals itself closed to keep dirt inside. It also traps 100-percent of dust mites, ragweed, and common grass pollens. The bag effortlessly slides back in from the front when replaced. Other highlights include a handle that adjusts for people of all heights, a headlight to illuminate the cleaning path, soft wheels, a carry handle, and a cord-rewind system that retracts 28 feet of cord quickly and easily at the push of a button. The vacuum cleaner measures approximately 14 by 15 by 43 inches and carries a one-year warranty that covers the entire vacuum, plus a lifetime warranty on the belt.

Hoover Savvy U8181-900 Bagged/Bagless Combo Upright Vacuum Review

Average Reviews:

I read the review below and thought I'd take a chance. However, I found the same reviewer almost everywhere I looked at the product, and only that reviewer. Raised some questions. When the product arrived there was a problem with the level of suction, it was not picking up minor items. I called the Hoover 800 service number and was unhappy to find that it was just a phone dump. It asked where you are and a computer gives you the name and address of a dealer in my case 40 minutes away and then disconnects you. I expect a company like Hoover to have a legitimate customer service department. I have a pet and a clean home is important to me; I have returned the Hoover and purchased the Dyson DC14 Animal. The Dyson is more costly, however if I waste my time cleaning and not picking up anything I believe that the cost of having a poorly performing unit in my case is greater than the outlay for the Dyson. This may have been just a defective unit however I believe it would do someone seeking to buy the Hoover U8181-900 well to check things out.

Dyson DC21 Stowaway Canister Vacuum Review

Dyson DC21 Stowaway Canister Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to admit I was skeptical at first because of the lukewarm "professional" reviews of Dyson in general, but now I'm a true convert. I LOVE this vacuum (coming from someone that HATES housecleaning).
Pros
--Canister style vacuum-great for those of us with back problems that can't push around a heavy upright for long.
--Suction power-WONDERFUL suction on this thing.
--Power brushes-stiff bristles "refresh" the carpet and can easily be turned off by foot controls (no bending down).
--Maneuverability-this has a ball style joint that makes it extremely maneuverable.
--Compact storage-it wraps around itself and is light enough to easily pick up and carry.
--No filters or belts to replace-just clean the built-in filter every 6 months with tap water.
--Quiet!-this is the quietest vacuum I've ever used.
--Retractable cord-guess this is standard on most canisters, but as a former upright user this is a nice feature to me.
--Low profile vacuum head-makes it easier to get under the couches, beds, etc.
--No bags to buy...ever!
--5 Year Warranty
Cons
--No headlight-funny I didn't realize how dark some of my corners are.
--Using attachments is a little awkward because of the larger, inflexible handle, but I imagine I'll get used to it.
--Short power cord-could definitely use a few more feet, but I suspect this was as long as they could fit into the compact unit.
--Power brushes-just a warning here, they're not for delicate carpets. They're rather stiff compared to most and I imagine could do some damage to older/thinner rugs.
--Small collection bin-available volume seems small due to the compact design, but it's EASY to empty, so not really a big problem.
--Price-it's not cheap, but I did find a 20% off coupon on-line for another store so saved $100.
There are enough cons that I can't give this vacuum 5 stars, but none of them are serious enough in my opinion to be major detractors. I'm definitely happy with my purchase.

Delivering 220 airwatts of suction power, this canister vacuum cleaner features advanced Root Cyclone technology to ensure thorough, efficient cleaning with no clogging or loss of suction. The unit's hard-floor tool provides improved pick-up on hard surfaces, while its quick-draw Telescope Reach extends instantly for stair and high-reach cleaning. Turn the motorized brushbar on to remove dirt and pet hair from carpets, or turn it off to protect rugs and delicate floors. Thanks to the vacuum cleaner's money-saving, lifetime HEPA filter, air expelled from the unit contains up to 150 times less mold and bacteria than common breathing air. Other highlights include a motorized cleaner head for easy maneuverability and cleaning in tight spaces, a 16-2/5-foot cord, and 4/9-gallon bin. In addition, the hose and wand compress and wrap for compact storage. The vacuum cleaner measures 17-2/3 by 11 by 13-4/5 inches and carries a five-year warranty.
From the Manufacturer

Dyson's Stowaway canister vacuum is ideal for those who want the convenience and store-ability of a canister but also want a floor-cleaning machine that doesn't lose suction. It easily wraps to store away, as the hose and wand collapse and wrap for storing purposes. Because of its motorized cleaner head, the Stowaway provides an effortless steering experience, making it easy to maneuver and clean in tight spaces. It has a foot operated brush control, so you can operate it without bending down, and a clear polycarbonate bin that lets you see when it's ready to empty.

Dyson Stowaway: The Only Canister that Doesn't Lose Suction

The Stowaway canister vacuum utilizes Dyson's renowned Root12Cyclone technology. The Dyson cyclone spins air at high speed, so dirt and dust are thrown out of the airflow and collected in the bin, not on filters or bags. Unlike other vacuums, a Dyson doesn't clog and lose suction, so it picks up more dirt. Also, the vacuum's motorized brushbar has powerful bristles which remove dirt and pet hair from carpets, and it has no belt to replace. The Stowaway is very hygienic--its clean expelled exhaust air has up to 150 times less bacteria and mold than air you breathe. Lifetime HEPA filtration is another way that this vacuum keeps things clean (it's been approved for allergy sufferers by the British Allergy Foundation). The extra cleaning tools are stored board for simple and rapid access, and, for easier cleaning in confined areas like cars, the tools can be fitted directly to the end of the wand. The Dyson Stowaway also boasts a durable, tough construction--it's made from ABS and polycarbonate, materials used to manufacture crash helmets.

What Makes Dyson Different

Bags Clog Suction

When the vacuum cleaner is empty, clean air flows into the machine and out through the pores of the bag. However as soon as you start to use the machine the bag starts to fill with dust and debris. The bag acts as a filter and the machine starts to lose suction. This is because the pores of the bag begin to clog with the dust that the machine has picked up. This restricts the airflow which causes loss of suction power.

Other Bagless Systems Clog like Bags

When the vacuum cleaner is new, clean air flows through the container and out through the filters.
However as soon as you start to use the machine the container starts to fill with dust and debris. The filters clog, and the machine starts to lose suction.
This is because the surface of the filter becomes blocked with dust, restricting the airflow which causes a loss of suction power.

Only Dyson Doesn't Lose SuctionDyson Root Cyclone technology uses 200,000G of centrifugal force in the cyclones to filter dust and remove dirt from the airflow efficiently. Because there is nothing to obstruct the airflow, it doesn't clog and doesn't lose suction.
Dyson proves no loss of suction claim using the IEC 60312 Cl 2.9 test standard.

Dyson has the Most Advanced Cyclone Technology

The Dyson Story

James Dyson

You know the feeling when some everyday product lets you down. You wish someone could solve the problem. James Dyson does that. He is a man who likes to make things work better. With his research team he has developed products that have achieved sales of over $10 billion worldwide.

The Bag ProblemIn 1978, while vacuuming his home, James Dyson realized his bag vacuum cleaner was constantly losing suction power. He noticed how dust quickly clogged the pores of the bag and blocked the airflow, so that suction dropped rapidly. He set to work to solve this problem. 5 years and 5,127 prototypes later, the world's first cyclonic bagless vacuum cleaner arrived.

No Place for New TechnologyJames Dyson offered his invention to major manufacturers. One by one they turned him down, apparently not interested in new technology. They seemed determined to continue selling bags, worth $500 million every year. Later, Hoover's Vice President for Europe, Mike Rutter, said on UK national TV: "I do regret that Hoover as a company did not take the product technology off Dyson; it would have lain on the shelf and not been used".

Hoover UH70040W Mach Cyclonic Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Hoover UH70040W Mach Cyclonic Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We previously owned three Hoover Windtunnel vacuum cleaners. This is by far Hoover's worst design! It is very noisy in operation, the suction will stop and then a filter needs to be cleaned that requires 24 hours to air dry. Extremely messy to deal with emptying the cannister. When it's working, it does pick up well. But it requires too much maintenance. We regret purchasing this vacuum model.

Hoover U5468-900 WindTunnel Supreme Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Hoover U5468-900 WindTunnel Supreme Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my husband and I decided to replace our 12-year old Hoover, we did hours of internet research on vacuums. Eventually, we decided to stick with a bag model, as dealing with canisters and filters sounded like too much trouble (plus, we don't have pets, so we didn't really see the need). After weighing various factors, from special features to ease of use to price, we decided to go with this Hoover Windtunnel model.
We got a great price using Amazon's discount offer, and the vacuum shipped very quickly despite our choice of Super Saver shipping. The unit required only simple assembly, although I should note that our package was missing a required bolt, so we had to contact Hoover for a replacement and wait another week or so before we were able to complete assembly and use the vacuum. Finally, we had the opportunity to try our new product. The first thing we noticed was the sound, as this vacuum, while still loud, is noticeably quieter than our old Hoover. Second, the cord is significantly longer (about 30 feet), which is very convenient for maneuvering around our home. My husband also appreciated the convenience of the headlight, although to be fair, most newer models include this feature.
As far as cleaning ability goes, this vacuum does a good job. It doesn't necessarily out-perform our old vacuum, but it does seem to stir up less dust. Also, the larger vacuum head speeds up the chore time a bit (although it also makes it harder to fit in tight places). The dirt indicator light did seem to be consistent with areas that required a bit more attention, which was nice. Another feature of this vacuum is the build-in handle at the unit's base for cleaning stairs; this was a nice idea, but my husband (who does the majority of the vacuuming in our house--lucky me!) found it to be a bit cumbersome and uncomfortable to use.
Overall, we are happy with our choice of this vacuum, a solid performer that can be purchased via Amazon at a very reasonable price. If you are living in a home with no pets and looking for a good basic vacuum, this would be an excellent choice.
UPDATE JULY 2008: Unfortunately, I need to downgrade my review of this vacuum, as its performance has deteriorated over time, and we are currently in the market to purchase a new one. My husband, who is the main user of the vacuum, compiled the following list of complaints:
1. The on/off switch ceased working shortly after the one-year warranty period expired. Currently, the vacuum can only be turned on or off by plugging and unplugging the unit from an electrical outlet.
2. The height adjuster failed, also shortly after the one-year warranty period expired; the vacuum now leaves an odd-looking wave pattern on the carpet unless it is used at the highest setting (which is the least effective).
3. The natural forward momentum of the vacuum stopped after only a few months of use, making the unit more difficult to push.
4. The dirt indicator light seems arbitrary and thus virtually useless.
5. The vacuum is awkward to use on stairs: the place to grab is not a handle--rather, it is just an indentation in the plastic, which becomes painful to hold after only a few seconds.
6. The cord does not remain attached to the clamps on vacuum during use: when the cord is fully extended, it pulls loose of the clamps, causing it to constantly get underfoot.
7. The vacuum's motor "revs" loudly at random times and for no apparent reason.
8. The dirt bags are difficult both to attach and to remove.
9. The vacuum does not perform well on hard floors: it blows dirt around, necessitating several passes.
10. The vacuum feels heavy and has a wide head, making cleaning in tight spaces difficult.

Equipped with a 12 amp motor and patented WindTunnel technology, this bagged upright vacuum cleaner delivers powerful cleaning performance. The unit's 15-inch-wide cleaning path with a dual brush agitator gets the job done quickly, while edge groomers effectively clean near baseboards and furniture. In addition, its five height settings allow for switching from bare floors to carpets with ease, and the cleaner's Embedded DirtFinder system provides red and green indicator lights to alert users to areas that may need more cleaning attention. The unit also comes with a HEPA allergen filtration bag that traps 99.98-percent of all particles down to 0.3 microns, plus a washable secondary filter, located in the bag compartment, which protects the motor from dirt particles. For thorough cleaning, on-board tools include a deluxe stretch hose, two extension wands, a dusting brush, an upholstery nozzle, and a crevice tool for hard-to-reach areas. Exclusive upfront tool storage keeps all the tools within easy reach. Other highlights include fingertip on/off power control, a headlight, a 31-foot power cord, a full-bag indicator, and a carrying handle for easy transport. Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015 Review

Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015
Average Reviews:

We went through our second Dyson, and decided to switch just for the sake of doing so. Aside from the really high end European models, we opted for this new "prestige" line from Hoover, figuring it would be interesting to see what's the best they can do at a higher price point.
The machine itself looks really good, and when you turn it on, it's like starting a nice car, it almost purrs. The electronic start/stop and the electronic height adjustments are fabulous, very refined. And the machine seems to pick up everything in site.
Now, here are a few things to keep in mind, none of which are deal-breakers, but believe me, this thing is not perfect.
First and foremost, emptying the dirt chamber. At first we thought it was like most other bagless machines, you flick a lever and let the stuff fall in your garbage. But after about a week, we noticed the machine not picking up nearly as well, and we couldn't figure out a thing.
Then we looked carefully and saw that a huge collection of hair and debris had collected inside an inner cup, wrapped around the so-called cyclonic device.Once we got rid of that stuff, the vacuum was like new again. Still, it is hardly referred to in the manual, and it is rather a messy task.
Finally is the "dirt" indicator. It works on some sort of audio principle, sending out sounds which come back distored if they run in to dirt. I find that this works most of the time, but sometimes, it just stays red, and even after going over the area five times, it stays red.
I guess one could beef about the extension cord, why they didn't come up with some better way to unreel it and attach it to the machine. This is just like every other vacuum in that respect, but the cord seems longer.
I think I would buy it again, but the bag emptying procedure is sloppy and very unsophisticated. I'd be looking for machines that might do that job better.

Hoover Platinum Cyclonic Canister Vacuum with Power Nozzle, Bagless, S3865 Review

Hoover Platinum Cyclonic Canister Vacuum with Power Nozzle, Bagless, S3865
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To start, I should mention that I'm hard on vacuums. We have different flooring types, multiple levels in the house, animals, long hair and children, as well as living in a never ending construction zone in the center of allergy alley. Thus, I need a fairly heavy performing vacuum that manages flooring transitions as well as being able to do stairs and furniture.
If that weren't asking a lot already, I need it to be heavy enough to be multifiltered and high powered, but light enough that I can tote it up the stairs.
I've had the Platinum Hoover Canister for a 3 months now, and I've been pleased with the performance. This one replaced a previous Windtunnel, and while I miss a few things from the old version (like different power settings), all in all, the new version outperforms the older version.
Pros:
Suction is fantastic. Transitioning from area rugs to hardwoods and then to carpet is easy. Super long power cord lets you do multiple areas without having to unplug and replug. Filters, filters, filters. Allergies in the house have become noticeably better with this unit. It's a lot more quiet that previous versions. Powerhead is fantastic for getting critter hair off the furniture and drapes. Reset button on the main head is a wonderful thing, if like me, you have ninja shoelaces in unlikely places; such as those cleverly hidden by small children who have kicked their shoes under the couch. Almost no dust escapes the vacuum while it is running, and while it is all in one unit...but that leads us to the cons...
Cons:
Emptying this vacuum is not for the wheezy. You will get dirty, you will have a cloud of dust, you will curse yourself and the Hoover engineers if you make the mistake of emptying it in the house. Trust me on this one. The only good way to empty it is to take the canister out to your big trash can, standing upwind and praying.
As well, the canister has collection areas that cannot be touched, washed or otherwise cleaned. I realize that the engineering design behind this was to keep the user away from the dirt, but it also means that if something gets caked in there, like if you clean on a humid day...you're kinda hosed. (No pun intended....ok, a *little* intended.) It's as though the engineers had *seen* someone use a vacuum, but didn't actually vacuum anything themselves, and so hadn't quite worked through the final step of cleaning the vacuum itself.
Still, the minor inconvenience of what I think is a poor engineering decision on that one part, is outweighed by the performance, the price point, and the significant reliability that I've gotten from other Hoover products.
For a neat person with a small space, this vacuum is probably overkill...but for large houses filled with dirt tracking children and animals...this vac is a clear winner in it's price range.

after reading many reviews from many different sources we decided to purchase this vacuum. we ended up getting it from costco as it was quite a bit cheaper than on amazon at the time. i have to say that we've been thrilled with this vacuum so far. it does a wonderful job on our carpet leaving no trace of dog hair behind. the dirt sensor is a fun addition although i'm not completely sure what it's thinking sometimes. the self-propel feature is great and works effortlessly with normal vauuming gestures gliding the vacuum along the floor with ease.
we were looking at some dyson vacuums as well but after going to the store and test driving both models the dyson vacuums, although great to look at, seemed heavy and awkward to use most of the time. the hoovers seemed to have a good vacuum feel to them.
the set of attachments is also nice and are very easy to use.

I have two dogs, and have owned Dyson, Kenmore and other vacuums, none have lifted dirt and dog hair like this vacuum does at a fraction of the price that I had paid for the Dyson. The vacuum easily comes apart and all parts can be cleaned. The self-propelled feature is necessary since this is a heavy vacuum. The best feature for me is the ability to fully remove the agitator brush roll to remove the pet hair. Well-designed and easy to assemble and operate. Unfortunately, due to poor shipping, the vacuum box was damaged and the unit itself received some exterior damage. It might be better to find this product on sale in the store.

Hoover WindTunnel Canister Vacuum, Anniversary Edition, Bagged, S3670 Review

Hoover WindTunnel Canister Vacuum, Anniversary Edition, Bagged, S3670

It's been a long road to get to this particular vacuum. About a year ago, I bought a used Filter Queen that was touted as the best canister on market. I hated it from the start, would just push objects across the carpet instead of picking them up. DREADED using it, it was so cumbersome and didnt have any modern features, such as auto cord rewind. So finally was able to sell that, even lost a few bucks on deal but just wanted it out of the house.
Then I bought what I thought I wanted, a Sears model. Have had a Sears Progressive before but the quick release feature broke on it (a piece of plastic inside tube, could not be fixed) and now it was quick releasing too quickly.....
So I thought that would be a good choice but once I got it home, it just seemed flimsy and cheap. Didn't even work so well. So back to the store it went. Seems Sears products are getting flimsier and are not the same quality as of just a few years ago.
Did a bunch of internet research and came upon this Hoover model. Was not even aware that other vacuums, other than Sears, had the quick release feature. This is my major requirement, and was pleased to find another option than Sears. All reviews I found spoke highly of this vacuum, so I ordered it sight unseen and it arrived yesterday.
Well I am most pleased!!! Just taking it out of the box the quality seemed superior to the Sears model I had just returned. Also very sharp looking, and it works great!! Super long cord, telescopic wand, really generous sized hardwood floor attachment and it also has this odd shaped onboard brush attachment , that I am in love with. It is the perfect shape to clean your baseboards and with your adjustable wand, there is no need for alot of uncomforable bending. Great for a tall gal! So I am now a very happy neat freak, finally have a vacuum I am happy with and look forward to using!!!

Hoover WindTunnel Canister Vacuum, Electronic Bagless, S3765-040 Review

I have never done a review of an item before but but I spent so much time researching this vacuum cleaner purchase that I decided to. The other reviews were very helpful so I wanted to give something back. Please understand this review covers the machines ergonomics and functional aspects. Since the machine is new in our home I can not address how well the vacuum will perform after extended periods. First let me say that this purchase came after a lot of research. I compared most brands on the market and and narrowed the field to the hoover and the Dyson. After a trip to the local store I ruled out the Dyson due to its cumbersome design, high price and the series of steps necessary to use the wand and accessories. What a pain!. In addition the beater brush area is very high on Dyson the and would be very difficult to get under furniture and cabinets. Now that said, let it be know that my wife if a vacaholic. The vacuum runs every day in this house. For the last several years we have used a $400 Panasonic machine and we thought it was doing a good job. We were wrong! A first cleaning with this new hoover has returned several cups of dust and dirt from EACH room!!. Really!.This hoover finds dirt that the Panasonic didn't know existed!. The beater bar is very aggressive it will actually pull the head along if you don't restrain it. At this point I think I will just list the pros and cons as that is easier for the reader. The Pros far out weigh the cons on this machine and I think with a few simple changes hover will have the ultimate machine in this line. We are very pleased.
Pros:
-Incredible suction and very aggressive beater bar.
-Excellent design with a all the controls at your fingers.
-Easy and quick access to wand and tools.
-Automatic cord recoil
-hand held suction powered beater brush
-No bags
-Ease of use
-Nice flexible hose
-convinient handle for carry.
-easy to empty dust bin
-Nice looking machine
-Good value for the price.
Cons:
-Not all the tools store on the unit.
-No electronic dirt sensor.
-brush and wand attachments are small are poorly designed.
-Brush has very short stiff bristle that not serve well on blinds, ceiling fans. etc
-The cord is bit stiff and doesn't seem to match the quality of the rest of the vacuum.
-Dust bin has to be emptied some what frequently.
